This beautiful poem tells the delightful story of Pilar, a girl who one day goes to the seaside with her mother. There, she sees a girl playing on the beach.
Pilar, from a well-to-do family, wants to go down to the beach in her brand-new little pink shoes and her new feather hat. She is a divine, beautiful little girl whose clothes always match and who does not have a worry in the world. Everyone admires her as she passes. She wants to go to where the poor and the old people are sitting, where there are some girls all alone. After a while, Pilar comes back, her head down, as it is difficult for her to walk. She is barefoot, having given her shoes to a sick girl to keep her warm. She has many shoes at home, she thinks, and what do her pretty pink shoes matter to her if by giving them away she can help the needy girl. Her dress is all undone, as she has given all her ribbons and adornments to the poor girl. When night falls, her father sends a car to pick up Pilar and her mother. They como home in total silence. Pilar is sad. She has discovered that, whilst some people are happy and have everything they need, others cry because they have nothing.
