In the afternoons, while he writes tales in an attempt to inmortalize his name, Marta leads their cow along God¿s paths in search of pastures beyond the village limits that belong to noone. One such afternoon, Marta comes across a basket at the foot of the local stone cross. Lying in the basket in a baby boy, barely a week old. She decides to make him her own and look after him; Andrés, however, is very concerned and confused, prefering to give the baby up to the authorities and let them to decide what to do.
